Deputies celebrated community partnerships and professional achievement this week through outreach at Southport Elementary and the jail’s new accreditation status.

Panama City, FL – The Bay County Sheriff’s Office marked two major milestones this week — recognition for excellence inside its correctional facility and a day of learning and engagement with students at Southport Elementary School.

Key Points

  • Bay County Jail earns official Florida Corrections Accreditation for meeting state standards.
  • Deputies participated in Southport Elementary’s “Celebration of Learning,” showcasing specialized units.
  • Community outreach focused on building trust and inspiring future law enforcement leaders.

Jail earns Florida Corrections Accreditation

Sheriff Tommy Ford announced that the Bay County Jail has officially received Florida Corrections Accreditation — a statewide distinction recognizing correctional facilities that meet or exceed professional and operational standards. The accreditation reflects the department’s commitment to safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within its correctional system.

Deputies visit Southport Elementary for community event

Earlier in the week, deputies joined Southport Elementary’s Celebration of Learning, where students had the opportunity to explore various law enforcement specialties. Children interacted with members of the Bomb Squad, Crime Scene Investigations Unit, and SWAT Team, while learning about drone technology and meeting one of the agency’s K9 units.

The sheriff’s office said the event helped foster positive relationships between deputies and students, providing a hands-on look at the diverse work law enforcement performs in the community.

Officials thanked Southport Elementary for hosting the event, adding that initiatives like these strengthen community ties and inspire young residents to consider careers in public service.
